Mentorship and Support
We believe that strong mentorship builds the foundation for growth, confidence, and meaningful career development. In addition to regular support from the PI, lab members are encouraged to explore broader mentoring networks that align with their goals, identities, and interests. I always try to be available for my students and support them closely, but I also encourage them to connect with other mentors they might feel more comfortable with or relate to in different ways. If a trainee is interested in connecting with someone for mentorship, I am happy to offer guidance or make introductions.
I currently mentor a few women at different stages of their careers and, as my time allows, I am always open to mentoring others who are seeking advice and support. I also have a mentor myself and believe deeply in the value of having someone to learn from and grow with. Mentorship in our lab is not just about career guidance. It is about building trusted relationships and supporting one another along the way.
I especially encourage women in the lab to take mentorship seriously and to seek out support as they navigate what is often a male-dominated environment. It is important to recognize that not all role models need to be extraordinary or far removed from everyday experience. Sometimes, very successful women can feel intimidating to younger trainees who may think they can never reach that level. Having regular, approachable mentors who understand what those early steps feel like is just as important and can make a real difference. That is the kind of mentorship culture we strive to build in this lab.
New postdocs in the lab are also encouraged to join the WISE Planet mentorship program. It offers leadership training, professional development, and a supportive network for women in STEM.
If you would like me to be your mentor or are looking for guidance on finding one, feel free to send me an email. I am happy to talk and see how I can support you.
